The company, which specialises in cycling holidays around Asia, is running a 10-day trip departing from the UNESCO World Heritage listed city of Luang Prabang – “the jewel of Indochina” – on December 19.
Following the Mekong river to Pakse in the far south of the landlocked country, the 165 km journey offers a festive alternative for adventurous families but, with a maximum of 45 km covered on any one of the seven days spent cycling, it is suitable for confident cyclists of most ages, while longer distances are covered by minibus or plane.
The itinerary also includes plenty of off-the-bike activities including kayaking, boat rides and hiking as well as visits to colourful temples, wildlife, caves, mountains and rivers.
Covering some of South East Asia’s most spectacular scenery, the route heads to the small town of Vang Vieng with its backdrop of karst limestone mountains and on to the capital Vientiane, before a short flight to Pakse and an exploration of the Bolaven Plateau. At an average elevation of 1200 meters and featuring ethnic minority villages, coffee and fruit plantations and scenic waterfalls, the area provides a taste of life seemingly captured in time.
Accommodation is in hotels selected for comfort and style, bikes are available for all ages and, as with all Grasshopper Adventures itineraries, the trip operates with an air-conditioned support minibus for the transportation of luggage, supply of on-the-road snacks, and for any cyclists to rest weary legs.
Family Christmas in Laos costs from £1830 per person with children 12 years and under discounted by 20 per cent. It operates with a maximum of 14 people and the price excludes international flights.
